The Humane Society

Mr. Moishe Alexander is a proud supporter of the Humane Society, a nonprofit organization created to protect the rights of animals around the world. The Canadian division of the Humane Society has made a tremendous impact on the rights of wildlife around the country and continues to fulfill its important role with the help of generous benefactors like Moishe Alexander. Most recently, the Humane Society of Canada has been involved with undercover investigations into animal abuse, expanding education programs in coordination with other groups and individuals, leading relief operations in areas hit by natural disasters, and upholding a European Union import ban on furs from animals caught in leghold traps. Internationally, the Humane Society of Canada works closely with divisions in other countries to fight for the rights of those that do not have their own voices.

Humane Society divisions around the world joined forces earlier this year to lobby for an agreement recently approved by the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals, an organization backed by the United Nations. The agreement was put into place to protect the global shark population, which has been rapidly declining in recent years. Potentially joining over 100 countries, the agreement coordinates multiple research efforts concerning the best methods for managing shark populations. Seven species of shark are mentioned in the agreement: the great white, basking, whale, probeagle, spiny dogfish, shortfin, and longfin mako sharks. All seven species are threatened by over-fishing, illegal trade, habitat destruction, prey depletion, pollution, and climate change. Sharks are particularly vulnerable to over-fishing because of their low reproductive rates and long gestation periods. Animals deserve a voice in today’s world and with individuals like Moishe Alexander, who are passionate about protecting their rights, the Humane Society of Canada has the ability to protect animal populations nationally and beyond.

The Canadian Cancer Society

For many years, Mr. Moishe Alexander has been a benefactor of the Canadian Cancer Society. The Society was officially created in 1938, but it had been in development for almost a decade previous to its establishment, growing out of a cancer committee of the Saskatchewan Medical Association. As doctors began to notice a failure in the general public to notice the early signs of cancer, they banded together to increase awareness and save lives by helping to catch the disease in its onset. After the first committee was formed, other Provincial Medical Associations adopted similar programs and the Canadian Medical Association eventually formed its National Study Committee on Cancer. In the mid 1930s, the Governor General of Canada launched a campaign on behalf of the King George V Silver Jubilee Cancer Fund, the proceeds of which were used to form the Canadian Cancer Society.

Moishe Alexander is honored to support the multi-faceted approach to facing cancer that the Canadian Cancer Society has adopted. In addition to becoming the largest national charitable resource for cancer research funding, the Society also runs advocacy, prevention, awareness, and support programs. An important part of the battle against cancer is creating a healthier environment for Canadian citizens through social and political change, a crusade currently being led by the Society. One of the most inspiring facets of the Canadian Cancer Society is its support groups for cancer patients as well as their family members, caregivers, and friends. By pairing these individuals with others who have had similar experiences, they can learn from each other and together grow in strength and resilience. The Society also offers practical support programs, such as transportation to treatment centers. The work being done by the Canadian Cancer Society makes a positive impact on thousands of lives and will save countless more in the future with the continued support of donors like Moishe Alexander.

United Chesed Charity

Mr. Moishe Alexander is deeply involved with the United Chesed Charity, a nonprofit organization formed to help the needy in the local community. The United Chesed Charity uses its resources to provide basic necessities such as food, shelter, clothing, and furniture. The organization also helps connect individuals with those than can help solve pressing financial issues, medical problems, legal difficulties, family disagreements, and social complications. Everyone in the community deserves access to the necessities of life and the United Chesed Charity helps to ensure that none go cold or hungry. Uniquely, the United Chesed organization makes itself available around the clock for emergency rapid response and works to meet emergency needs as quickly as possible. Each year, the United Chesed Charity makes a measurable difference in the lives of about 1,000 families in the Toronto area. This totals approximately $750,000 worth of medical services, clothing, food, and other necessities. The United Chesed Charity accepts both monetary donations and non-monetary items in its mission to serve the community, and it has been Moishe Alexander’s pleasure to witness great growth within the United Chesed membership.

The United Chesed of Greater Toronto was established by Dr. Brian Price as an umbrella Jewish organization to unite all congregations in the Toronto area. Since its inception, the United Chesed has helped thousands of individuals received food, shelter, clothing, and medical assistance, regardless of affiliation, through its charitable arm. The organization is also concerned with raising awareness in the community about those around us who are in need. In 2005, Dr. Price organized a community awareness event featuring Mr. Paul Godfrey, the Chief Executive Office officer of the Toronto Blue Jays, as its keynote speaker. With the support of dedicated individuals like Moishe Alexander, the United Chesed consistently moves closer to its goal of a world where no one goes without food or shelter.
